Term originally used in physics to refer to a material’s resistance and power to return to its original form after being subjected to a force that it cannot withstand. Applied in psychology, it refers to a person’s ability to endure and cope with traumatic situations. It is also used to refer to a person’s ability to respond positively in spite of hardship. It is a form of male chauvinism to assume or demand resilient attitudes from women who have suffered male violence.
